Composite The Fourth Plinth Project Image Bank -

The Fourth Plinth -

1. Hannah Hoch
2. Cedric Delsaux
3. Jeff Koons
4. Richard Hamilton

Hannah Hoch:
Hoch is a mixed media artists and photographer who merges images in the movement of 'Dada' otherwise known as 'Nonsense'. The images are surreal and allow a viewer to form their own opinions about the implicit meanings of the image.

Cedric Delsaux:
Delsaux employs photo-realistic techniques of photo-manipulation and image merging to create a Star Wars fantasy world within reality.

Jeff Koons:
Koons creates surreal artwork manipulating the size of objects and employs nostalgic objects that people will relate back to their childhood. The meaning behind these may be that our childish traits are out of place in the adult world.  Or possibly the meaning could be that in modern day we need to set aside time for play, or other forms of happiness, due to the size of the sculptures and that we would be unable to ignore them.

Richard Hamilton:
Hamilton also employs surrealism and collage techniques to create a interesting images.

Composite Image Bank -

Manipulated Images -

Definition -

Composite Images: Composite images use multiple images and then combine them into a single image.

Manipulated Image: An image that has been edited. Images can look surreal or realistic when edited.

Personal and Ethical Issues -

A personal issue that could arise is that people may not wish to edit their images at all let alone in a surreal or possibly unethical way.

An ethical issue that could possibly arise, especially within the media industry, is the Photoshop of portraiture which can create social pressure and oppressive beauty standards on people within society.

Areas of Art and Design Industry Using Image Manipulation -

One of the most significant areas that use image manipulation is the advertising in the Magazine and Fashion industry which edit portraits featured in articles and on cover pages. During the editing process models 'imperfections' are removed and airbrushed which can link to one of the most common ethical issues relating to image manipulation; image manipulation of portraiture can result in oppressive beauty standards and therefore social pressure based around beauty.

Other areas that use image manipulation are surrealism, film, TV and music videos.

Documentary Image Bank -

Photo-Documentary -

Photo-Documentary : Photography that documents significant moments within society or in an individuals life.

Robert Frank:
Frank had a series called 'The Americans' published in the late 1950s. Frank himself was Swiss but decided to document the American lifestyle. The work is in the style of Street Documentary.

Corey Arnold:
Arnold documents his life through photography focusing mostly on his occupation as an alaskan fisherman who spends most of his life at sea on a crab fishing boat. Arnold also is part of film documentary on the Discovery Channel titled 'Deadliest Catch'. Therefore, it is interesting that Arnold continues to document his life in photographs rather than relying on film.

Low Key Lighting Image Bank -

Portraits -

Irving Penn :
Penn is an interesting artist who studies identity through his portraiture; Penn does this through a technique known as low key lighting that evokes a sense of mystery and other such emotions.  I especially like the second image as some would say that it is not necessarily identity, however, in my opinion I believe it is identity as it is the hand of Miles Davis, a trumpet jazz musician, playing a trumpet chord. As a result I strongly hold the belief that it is an example of portraiture in the study of identity even though arguably it can be said that portraiture is when a face is present in the image.
